The back lenses of a phoropter should be maintained with glass cleaner because this type of cleaning solution is specifically formulated to effectively remove smudges, fingerprints, and other debris without causing damage to the lenses. Glass cleaner typically evaporates quickly and does not leave behind residues that could interfere with visibility or the calibration of the device. In addition, using glass cleaner helps ensure that the lenses remain clear, which is crucial for accurate refraction measurements and delivering appropriate eyewear prescriptions.

In contrast, using water and a sponge may not provide sufficient cleaning power and could potentially scratch the lens surfaces. A damp cloth might seem like a more gentle option, but it may not effectively clean the lens if it is not specifically designed for optical surfaces. Lastly, stating that the lenses do not need maintenance overlooks the necessity of keeping the phoropter clean to ensure accuracy and maintain the quality of patient care. Regular maintenance is essential for preserving the integrity of the equipment and ensuring the best outcomes for patients.
